What are the signs of spring; those signs that tell you that spring has finally made it. In our old house that was on a tidal area the first sign of spring was the red winged blackbirds. They love marsh land and would appear long before the robins. Traditionally it is the robin that heralds the start of spring.
This has been such a strange, mild winter that it has been difficult to decide what is going on. One of the signs I have noticed lately is what women wear. In the cold winter months, even if they wear dresses, they have tights or leggings underneath to keep warm. Last night on the way to class (in NYC) I saw two ladies wearing hose. 98 others were still using leggings or tights but 2 weren’t. I figure this might be a sign of spring or at least optimism about its advent.
What are the signs or spring were you live?
It is cool and sunny today. May spring come soon for you.
When I lived in Toronto I loved going to the marsh near my home and watch the red winged black birds; they were my favourite. I also loved the blue jays and the blue birds we get in our backyard. For me spring was official when I would see a robin. They are another favourite bird! It meant the days were going to get warmer. Now I live in Arizona and Spring is different. It starts the end of January; you will hear song birds, and see and hear the Canadian red cardinals, tons of Loggerhead Shrike, Bullock’s Oriole and hummingbirds, and different coloured finch as well. It is a burst of colour and many different tunes this is the first sounds of spring followed by the end of February every cacti, tree and bush will be in full bloom! Makes my heart sing!
The birds bring us happiness. Pure and simple. Very cool what you shared.
Interestingly here in Maryland we had some snow flake this morning. Even though I saw a couple of blue Jays earlier this week in the back yard. For me the harbinger of spring is the buds of the Tulips. They sometimes even push against the last snow to show us the spring in all its color is here
Here in Ohio the first signs of spring are the buds on all of the trees, the Robins appearing, and the color of the many Goldfinches we get gets brighter. Of course there are a few more bird species that start appearing in the Spring as well. The mild winter we’ve had has totally confused the trees and bushes though. We’ve had buds on several trees for quite a while now. For the most part it doesn’t hurt most of the trees … except for our Peach tree. I guess this will be another Peachless year 🙁
